The production difficulties of round boxes in luxury packaging

Scatole Tonde

In the world of luxury packaging, elegance of form is as important as functionality, and in this sense, round boxes are one of the most refined symbols of this sector, often used for cosmetics, perfumes, food, watches and other high-value goods. However, behind their aesthetics lie numerous production challenges that make their manufacture much more complex than that of more common rectangular boxes.

Unlike rectangular and square boxes, round boxes require more complex and less automatable production processes, particularly with regard to the curvature of the materials, as cardboard, coated paper or other coverings must be folded and glued with extreme precision to adhere to a cylindrical surface without creating air bubbles, creases or visual irregularities. This process often has to be done manually or semi-manually, increasing production times and labour costs.

The materials used for round boxes must also have specific characteristics, such as cardboard, which must be flexible enough to bend without breaking but at the same time strong enough to ensure the stability of the structure, without neglecting the fact that adhesives and coatings must also be compatible with the resulting curved surfaces, avoiding deformation due to mechanical stress or thermal shock. Finally, since this is luxury packaging, high-value finishes such as embossing, metallic foils or UV printing are also much more complex to achieve.

Although the industry has made significant progress in robotics and digital printing, many standard production lines are not suitable for the production of round luxury packaging, so many companies have to invest in dedicated equipment or use subcontractors with experience in the sector, increasing delivery times and costs. In this regard, it is also necessary to consider the higher waste compared to the production of classic boxes, with very strict quality control and necessary continuous staff training.

Finally, it should be noted that logistics are also penalised, for the same volume, as round boxes are less efficient in terms of stacking and storage, with higher transport and warehouse management costs. Therefore, for companies in the sector, deciding to use this type of packaging is a statement of style… but also a complex strategic investment, and it is essential to turn to truly specialised companies with extensive experience.
